Looking for WPMarketer Testers
Grunt Research Grant Research1 Since we released WPMarketer 1.0.0 on December 5th 2008, it has been downloaded over 100 times as a FREE plugin for Wordpress that is designed with the needs of Affiliate Marketing and Web site/blog monetization.
We want to thank everyone who has tried the tool. We have had reports of a couple errors we suspect relate to WP-Cache and/or other installed plugins. Over 100 development and testing hours went into the 1.0.0 release and rest assured we are working diligently to resolve bugs and plan to release an update very shortly.
We have also heard from many people who have successfully installed WPMarketer and like the Features we have included in this initial release. Now, we want to ask for your help improving this Marketing new tool set. All we ask is that you try downloading the FREE WPMarketer plugin, install it on your site and let us know what you think. Specifically, here is the information we’d love to have you share with our development team and growing user base:
- Did the plugin activate without errors?
- If not, what was the specific error message when you tried to activate?
- What version of Wordpress are you running?
- If possible, provide a list of other plugins you are running so we can test further.
- What version of PHP is your Web server running?
Thank you for replying to this post and taking time to comment and give us your feedback; we hope to show you just how useful WPMarketer will be in helping you monetize your Wordpress web site and are committed to improving it. We really want to hear your feedback; the good, the bad and the ugly.
Thanks,
Steve
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or ‘}’ in /home/theblend/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wpmarketer/tabulator_navigation.php on line 5
when i tried to enable the plugin. I had done it just fine on my localhost MAMP install of WP2.6, but going to the server didn’t work out at all.
version of WP, 2.6, and 2.7 on the server
PHP 4.4.8, 5
Thanks Dave,
We greatly appreciate the input everyone has given us. We have isolated this problem as a PHP4 incompatibility. We are working on the solution and will post an update on Wordpress.org shortly that resolves the Parse error: syntax error you and several others have reported. Your input helps confirm this and I suspect your local machine is running PHP5 whereas your server is running PHP4. Sorry for the inconvenience and please check back in a day or 2 for the update.

Steve
Hello,
I see great use of this plugin, but it doesn’t work with “Simple Tags” and “FeedWordPress”. It’s doesn’t seems to like “WP-Amazon” very well either.
There might be more non-compatibles but those are the ones I’ve found.
Regards
Michael
WP ver. 2.6.5 / Firefox, Flock, Seamonkey, IE, Crazy Browser / win2000pro
Thanks Michael,
Can you give us any further details please as to what happens when you have these plugins and WPMarketer activated at the same time? That will help us look into the issue further.
Steve
It seems like it have some java calls making “Simple Tags” and “FeedWordPress” feel ill…
Both plugins seems to be working at first hand, but when it come to the part demanding javascript they fai.
“Simple Tags” – when writing/editing a post it is supposed to bring up tag suggestions when clicked. It doesn’t any longer, but just expand or fold the control panel depending of its current status.
“FeedWordPress” – When trying to add a new feed it fails to do so.
I’m no expert so I might not be a big help, but I know that something is not working
Regards
Michael
Here’s a couple of things I noticed while using wp-marketer:
- The list of affiliate links takes up a lot of space/shows a lot of information. It would be nice if not only the categories could be expanded/collapsed but also the individual links with their information.
example:
+ category shoes
+ Shoe Merchant 2 – http://www.myblog.com/wpmarketer/shoe-merchant-2)
+ Shoe Merchant 2 – http://www.myblog.com/wpmarketer/shoe-merchant-2)
(clicking on a merchant link would then reveil outbound url, link relationship, etc.)
- The Auto linking feature creates links to the outbound url, not to the inbound wp-marketer masked url.
- clickthrough statistics could use improvement. Would be nice to have a simple overview of the nr of clicks on each affiliate link per day / week /month / etc.
- help text is displayed in my FireFox 3.0.4, see here:
http://internet-casinos.nl/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/wp-marketer-screenshot.png
But then again I seem to be experiencing some weird javascript problems so that could be the cause too. Displays ok in IE 7.
This is what I’ve come up with so far
For the rest thanks for working on this plugin!
Jay
My bad, the auto link feature does work correct, I didn’t use link masking…!
I’ve received the same:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or ‘}’ in /home/nho/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wpmarketer/tabulator_navigation.php on line 5
error.
Any updates available yet?
Nate and all,
The “parse error” fatal error results when you attempt to activate the WPMarketer plugin on a server running PHP 4.x. After substantial investigation and code review we have determined that WPMarketer is not compatible with PHP4. Since Wordpress 2.7 is reportedly the last major upgrade of Wordpress that will support PHP 4.x and many advanced plugins already require PHP 5.x or higher we have decided NOT to make the plugin compatible with PHP 4.x, which would cause a loss of functionality.
Since PHP 4.x is at end of life we encourage you to either request your hosting service upgrade your server to PHP 5.x or switch to a hosting service that does. PHP 4.x has not actively been developed on in over a year and we feel that the loss in functionality and time to degrade the plugin are not justified.
We apologize it has taken a week for us to declare that the plugin is not PHP 4.x compatible and hope everyone can understand the reasons behind our decision to declare that it requires PHP 5.x or higher. We will update the release notes on Wordpress.org shortly to reflect this fact.
Hello again,
I’m sorry to say, that your plugin still doesn’t work in companion with ‘FeedWordPress’ and ‘Simple Tags’ even after the latest update.
Michael
Thanks Michael,
While we can’t test against all of the thousands of plugins out there, the 2 you report having problems with are obviously quite popular so we’ll look again. I’m assuming the issues you see are still the same as you reported previously? Any additional details you can provide are appreciated since I don’t use either of those plugins so testing is a bit of a challenge. Thanks again for your help!
This is exactly what characterizes a great plug-in developer.
A fantastic engagement and willingness to make it functioning, and a unique support / follow up.
Acknowledging being unfair if demanding your plug-in to be integrate with every plug-in ever made, it is true that the two mentioned plug-ins are very popular ones, and that is why I have chosen to focus at those.
I am delighted to note that with the latest version of WPMarketer, there doesn’t appear to be any problems with comparability, using WPMarketer, FeedWordPress and Simple Tags in the same configuration.
You are a great team with a very professional attitude for sure.
Regards
Michael Johansen
Thanks Michael,
We had done testing against those 2 plugins you mentioned so glad to hear the conflict is resolved. We are back at work on new feature enhancements but please keep the great input coming. We want to hear from anybody who likes WPMarketer or who has problems with installation or use so that we can continue to improve it!
Steve
Thanks for Sharing.
Plea, Help me. I use plugin on localhost and error: Warning: file_get_contents(C:/AppServ/www/wp-content/themes/default/index.php) [function.file-get-contents]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in C:\AppServ\www\son\wp-content\plugins\wpmarketer\mescalero.php on line 72
Thanks. I love you.
Hi, i upgraded my host php language to php5.xx. the plugin still doesnt work, and gives the same error
“Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or ‘}’ in /home/aa/public/wp-content/plugins/wpmarketer/tabulator_navigation.php on line 5″
when i try to activate it, i even got trouble to log in my admin.. so i gave up… any solution ?
thanks otherwise !
Hi aicha,
As Eric pointed out earlier: the easiest fix is to add a handler that maps .php to PHP 5. If you have cPanel, you can do this easily by clicking on “Apache Handlers” and adding a mapping for “php” to “application/x-httpd-php5″ and that should fix the problem.
Try that if you have cpanel; otherwise let me know if you’re still having problems and we can explore other options.
Steve
Using the last update from Dec 26th my entire WP install has turned to molasses (both the Admin and public site). If I deactivate WP-Marketer everything goes back to normal.
I’m gonna play around and see if deactivating one of the 5 other plugins will cause speed to return indicating a conflict but at 4-5 mins a page load its a slow process…
Well I found out that it is WP-Marketer causing the slow down. It seems to be opening a crap ton of processes on the server. Ramps my CPU usage from 3% up to over 30% within seconds when it is the only plugin active on a fresh install of WP.
This is on WP 2.7 with PHP: 5.2.6
Hi syowr,
Thanks for reporting your issue. We do not see any significant resource use on our test or production servers … even with multiple WP installations running WPMarketer 1.0.6.
That said, the plugin does need to run several processes in order to index your site and make dynamic link insertions. We will do further performance testing and make changes if we find anything like what you describe.
Regards,
Steve
Hi.
I get an activation error.
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected $end in C:\\wp-content\plugins\wpmarketer\wp-marketer.php on line 243
Wordpress 2.7
PHP Version 5.2.6
System Windows NT WEBSERVER 5.2 build 3790
I can send more info if required.

Hi,
Firstly thanks for developing such a great plugin.
I’ve identified an issue that occurs when the index.php is in the root directory (www.domain.com) and the rest of the wordpress files in a different location (www.domain.com/wordpress/).
The plugin writes the links as http://www.domain.com/wordpress/link/product whic produces a 404 error. If I manually navigae to http://www.domain.com/link/product (IE without /wordpress/) the masking works fine.
I can partly use the functionality by re-writng the links manually in each post. I was wondering if there was anything that could be altered in the code to overcome this problem?
Thanks,
Simon
Also one more point – the plugin appears to conflict with the flash uploader in 2.7 – I can’t view photos in the uploader when the plugin is activated, but can when I swicth it off.
Cheers,
Simon
Hi there,
i installed WPMarketer and it seems to work – I am able to activate and I can add and edit links and categories.
But there is a problem in frontend – links always show 404 error in Wordpress. So somthing seems not to work in permalinks.
Same problem when i deactivate permalinks in WP settings.
I’m using WP 2.7.
Any idea?
Tom
Hi,
I may not get wpmarketer to work with Link Masking. I only got 404 pages when I click on the links. Similarly, if I click on the “?” icon in the wpbackend.
I have installed PHP 5 and using WP 2.7.
Would be very grateful if you could get help me with this problem.
Sincerely
Daniel
Hi,

Is there a way to eliminate the “subcategory”?
For example I want to have a URL like http://www.daxdesai.com/facebook go to my facebook page.
The way the plugin is, I’d have to create a subcategory and have it go to something more like http://www.daxdesai.com/go/facebook.
Let me know if anyone has figured it out.

The plugin breaks the WordPress v.2.8 interface in some areas. So far I’ve found that it disables the following WP functionality:
1. Bulk Edit
2. Down arrows on left sidebar navigation
3. “Check all” checkbox above posts, pages, etc
4. Quick Edit

Hello:
Wordpress 2.8.4 and PHP 5.1.20 on IIS 6
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected $end in D:\BizCom\ArtsInsider\wp-content\plugins\wpmarketer\wp-marketer.php on line 243
I am testing on a development website that mirrors the production website listed in the post url.
I have tried with a couple of different themes with the same result.
I am generally new to Wordpress so I don’t know what extra information to help you with.
Best,
Richard
